Long Beach, California

USA

Client: Port of Long Beach / Caltrans

Capital Cost: +$1 Billion USD

Project Description:

The Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement is a landmark infrastructure project designed to improve access to the Port of Long Beach, one of the busiest container ports in the world. As Civil Engineering Manager, we led the team responsible for developing the winning bid strategy and delivering detailed design and construction procurement documents under the Caltrans Design-Build Demonstration Program. The project includes the complete replacement of the original bridge with a 2,000-foot-long, six-lane cable-stayed structure featuring a 1,000-foot main span and more than 6,000 feet of approach viaducts—some rising over 200 feet.

The design also encompasses two major freeway interchanges, complex ramp systems, and extensive embankments. Our responsibilities included overseeing roadway geometry, stormwater management, utility coordination, visual quality enhancements, and public realm landscaping. We were also accountable for resource forecasting, budgeting, and aligning engineering outputs with procurement and construction requirements in collaboration with the Shimmick-FCC-Impregilo joint venture.
