Presidio Parkway
San Francisco, California
USA
- Client: San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA), Caltrans, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
Capital Cost: $1.34 billion
The Presidio Parkway represents a once-in-a-generation transformation of Doyle Drive—formerly an aging and seismically vulnerable approach to the Golden Gate Bridge—into a resilient, context-sensitive gateway that harmonizes infrastructure with the surrounding national park landscape.
Spanning 1.6 miles through the Presidio of San Francisco and positioned at the edge of the city’s northern shoreline, the project demanded a delicate balance between technical rigor and environmental and cultural stewardship. The new six-lane highway is designed to accommodate over 100,000 vehicles per day while preserving critical sightlines, protecting ecological habitats, and respecting adjacent historic landmarks.
As Deputy Project Manager, responsibilities included managing the delivery of detailed design and construction procurement documentation as well as contributing to the development of the project’s public-private partnership (P3) concession agreement.

- Coordination required extensive inter-agency and public engagement across a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including:
Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
Caltrans
National Park Service
Presidio Trust
Golden Gate National Recreation Area
Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District
Local residents and citizen advocacy groups
The resulting design prioritizes structural resilience, multimodal mobility, and landscape integration. Tunnel structures, landscaped parkways, and scenic overlooks reconnect the park and waterfront, restoring the historic integrity of the site and redefining the approach to one of America’s most iconic bridges.
